Welcome back to Hank’s Cars and Coffee. In Episode 7, we got around to covering the engine accessories such as the injection pump, turbo, fuel heater blanking plate, and replacing the water pump. This blog post will be brief and list the products I chose and why.
There are a handful of companies that provide Mercedes diesel injection pump products. Of those companies, there were only two that I found in the USA. The company I chose to use was Benz Injection. My reasoning behind going with them other than other companies had to do with two primary things; my budget and accessibility. When looking into products for this build, pricing was severely different for USA based vs EU or AU based companies due to shipping, tariffs, and other things. On top of those reasons, I was able to easily get hold of the owner of Benz Injection to explain my goals and get solid recommendations on what should work best for my application, and after a few months of researching prior to this build, I decided to buy all of my products from them, including my used engine.
What Injection Pump and Turbo for my OM606?
For my mild power goal of 300-350 horsepower/torque on my truck, I was advised to go with 7mm Mynä injection elements, paired with a Holset HE250 turbo. The 7mm Mynä elements will provide that happy middle ground for good, reliable, smooth power that should be slightly higher than the stock Ford 5.0 that originally came in my truck. This paired with the Holset HE250 turbo with an 8cm housing will give me that good, quick spooling, power on the low-end, and a good base for some tunable power if I decide to bump it up one day. I could’ve gone with higher power, but I wanted something reliable, efficient, and a good pairing for my Ford 4R70W that wouldn’t beat too hard on its freshly rebuilt internals.
I also purchased a fuel-heater blanking plate, along with a throttle cable bracket to mount on top of it in hopes that I’ll be able to use that bracket for my new throttle linkage once the engine is installed.
All that being said, I am happy so far with the quality of the Benz Injection products and how quick/easy it was to order and have delivered to me in such a short amount of time. I will give a more in depth review on these products once the engine is up and running inside the truck.
